ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Semenov Tian-Shansky is one of the major high summits of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too in the Ala-Archa mountain area. The glaciological study of the Adygine basin identifies it as the range’s highest peak, placing the mountain within the broader physical geography of the northern Tien Shan.
Its northwestern climbing face is described from the Uchitel Glacier, linking snow and ice terrain with upper rock. That setting makes the mountain very different from the lower valley’s wooded walks. The interest is the high, glaciated centre of the range and the way individual glacier basins frame its large mountain faces.
Route grading
4A Reported by the source
The climbers give 4A (Alpine D) and state that the Kyrgyz Alpine Club agreed. A separate official classifier entry was not verified here.
The 2015 Aitken–Potockiy northwest line, not the neighbouring Evsyukov, Plakushchev or Fedorov routes.
Preparation
- Trained glacier travel and crevasse-rescue competence within the team.
- Crampon and axe technique, belaying on the encountered snow/ice/rock and descent decisions.
Equipment to discuss with your guide
- Compatible mountain boots and crampons, axe/tools suited to the terrain, helmet and harness.
- Rope-team/rescue kit and rock/ice/snow protection selected for the actual line; weather and emergency equipment.

ROUTE OVERVIEW
At a glance
A northwest-face ascent of Semenov Tian-Shansky Peak from Uchitel Glacier, over snow, ice and upper rock. A GPX track is not available.
A verified GPX for this particular line is not available in the catalogue yet. This page describes the objective and preparation; coordinates and tracks are not fabricated.
Summit elevation reported in the source: 4895 m.
Grade reported by the source: 4А / Alpine D. It applies to the described line and reported conditions.
An ascent needs a separate assessment of the approach, altitude, slope conditions and descent. A short summit track does not automatically include the valley approach, acclimatisation or preparation for technical terrain.
Track length: Not available. This distance covers the track shown on the map. Add any approach, return or transfer sections that are outside it.
Is this route for you?
Choose the route after checking the actual start, finish and terrain with a local guide. Mapped geometry alone does not establish technical difficulty. Your group should be comfortable navigating offline and changing plans when conditions deteriorate.

Getting there
Confirm the actual approach with local guides and arrange return transport. The first track point may belong to an upper section rather than a vehicle-accessible trailhead.
Without a car
Confirm transport to the actual trailhead, not just the nearest town. Agree the return pickup point and a latest contact time before leaving mobile coverage.
By car & parking
Ask locally about road access, entry rules and a permitted place to park. Use the line only for its stated mode of travel and exact scope.
What you will find along the way
The 2015 line rises from Uchitel Glacier through snow and ice to upper rock. The report describes a difficult storm descent.
- Semenov Tian-Shansky Peak 42.5209, 74.5715
Difficult sections & safety
Mountain weather can change quickly. Rain affects traction and river crossings; snow can remain on shaded slopes. Never assume a mapped line confirms a safe crossing or a passable trail. Check recent conditions locally, set a turnaround time and leave your plan with someone who can raise the alarm.
How much time to allow
Plan your timing around the distance, ascent, terrain, weather and your group’s pace. Include breaks, the approach, descent and return transport. A past trip’s time is a reference, not a schedule for your group.
When to go
Confirm season and snow conditions before departure. Summer dates alone do not establish suitable conditions for a high mountain objective.
What to bring
For an ascent, confirm technical equipment, acclimatisation and team competence requirements with a qualified guide.
- Trail shoes or boots with good grip; layers, sun protection and waterproofs.
- Drinking water, food, a first-aid kit and a headlamp.
- An offline map, downloaded GPX, a charged phone and a power bank.
- An agreed return plan, local contact and a realistic fallback route.
