Route grading
3B From the classifier
Grade applies to this exact named line. Technical rock scales are kept in their original system and are not converted to a Russian alpine category.
Preparation
- Confident pitched climbing on ice, building belays, abseiling and crevasse rescue. Agree ropes, helmet, harness, technical ice equipment, protection and the return plan with the leader rather than selecting equipment from grade alone.

ROUTE OVERVIEW
At a glance
The mountain and the exact route
Izyskatel is a summit of the Ak-Sai climbing area near the Korona group. The classifier lists it at 4,400 m and identifies the northwest face as a 3B ice-and-rock route first climbed by A. Rodikov in 1988. This is a specific technical line, separate from the easier northeast-ridge itinerary.
Approach, ascent and return
Prepare through progressive acclimatisation and shorter technical practice before committing to the face. Agree the approach, high camp, line identification and descent with a leader familiar with the area. The published training programme includes an Izyskatel ice ascent, but participation in a course and independent readiness for this exact line are different assessments.
Planning the attempt
Before committing, agree a turnaround time, check-in procedure and the conditions that will cancel the climb. Keep reserve time outside the advertised summit day. Download an offline topographic map, but do not interpret the catalogue’s orientation points as a surveyed climbing line. This is an expedition-planning overview; the climbing topo and current local assessment remain essential.
Preparation and equipment
Confident pitched climbing on ice, building belays, abseiling and crevasse rescue. Agree ropes, helmet, harness, technical ice equipment, protection and the return plan with the leader rather than selecting equipment from grade alone.
Track length: Not available. This distance covers the track shown on the map. Add any approach, return or transfer sections that are outside it.
Is this route for you?
Choose the route after checking the actual start, finish and terrain with a local guide. Mapped geometry alone does not establish technical difficulty. Your group should be comfortable navigating offline and changing plans when conditions deteriorate.

Getting there
Arrange the approach, camp arrangements and any required access documents with a local organiser. The map marks orientation points only; no verified GPX for this exact ascent is supplied.
Without a car
Confirm transport to the actual trailhead, not just the nearest town. Agree the return pickup point and a latest contact time before leaving mobile coverage.
By car & parking
Ask locally about road access, entry rules and a permitted place to park. Use the line only for its stated mode of travel and exact scope.
What you will find along the way
Izyskatel Peak: northwest face, 3B
- Ratsek Hut 42.5350, 74.5288
- Izyskatel summit: orientation 42.5057, 74.5604
A point of the supplied route geometry. It does not by itself confirm a parking area, settlement or safe access. Read the access and route notes before planning your visit.
Difficult sections & safety
Ice-and-rock face above a glacier approach. Altitude, weather changes, falling material and a difficult retreat must be assessed for the exact line.
How much time to allow
Multi-day preparation and approach, with a technical summit day
When to go
Condition-dependent snow and ice season
What to bring
