Mars Canyon is a tourism name for a red-and-orange badland landscape on the south side of Issyk-Kul. The local team that promoted the name describes eroded valleys, narrow walls and unusual rock forms. It is a place for exploring the shape of the ground and the changing light, rather than looking for a single monument at the end of a paved path.

The name should not be confused with every canyon photographed as a Martian landscape. Skazka, Kok-Moynok and the Canyon of Forgotten Rivers have their own identities and access arrangements. When booking a visit, show the specific destination you mean and ask which part of the area your guide or driver proposes to use.

A good outing needs an agreed walking area and a clear return. Eroded ground can offer many tempting branches, while a photograph taken from above gives little information about the way between them. Stay within a route suited to your group, avoid climbing fragile walls for a better angle and leave natural formations unchanged.

Choose light and weather for the experience you want. A quiet walk can be more rewarding than a hurried search for a named rock from a drone photograph. Take water and protection from the sun; exposed terrain offers a different kind of day from a shaded mountain forest. This page describes the destination, not a surveyed walking circuit, and does not assign invented distance, elevation gain or completion time.

Issyk-Kul Region

Issyk-Kul Lake

Issyk-Kul is the great lake at the centre of eastern Kyrgyzstan’s best-known travel circuit. Its broad water surface lies between mountain ranges, with very different experiences around the shore: resort towns, small villages, beaches and access roads into alpine valleys.
