ROUTE OVERVIEW
At a glance
The valley and the counted stones
This trip leads away from Karakol into the Tyup valley, combining a settled road landscape with a monument whose stories need careful explanation. San-Tash is associated with a large stone mound and a wider burial landscape. The familiar account of Tamerlane counting soldiers with stones is a legend, not a verified record of what happened at the mound. That distinction gives the stop more interest: visitors can consider the physical remains and the later stories attached to them without confusing the two.
A staged day from Karakol
Use Karakol as the overnight base. If the Przhevalsky memorial museum is part of your programme, confirm its opening and make it the first stop. Park at the visitor approach and give the exhibition its own time; do not add a museum only because its marker lies near the road. Continue towards Tyup for a normal rest or meal break, then follow the checked public road to the monument approach.
The correct outward endpoint is near the stone monument south-west of the similarly named village and pass. Names alone can send a vehicle to the wrong place. Ask the driver to confirm the monument arrival point rather than accepting an automatic route to San-Tash village. The last visit takes place on foot from an appropriate roadside stopping place.
Respect the archaeological ground
Keep the car off mounds, grass and field margins. Do not add a stone, remove one or rearrange the pile for a photograph. A wider view from the existing visitor area explains the setting better than driving closer. Children need supervision around uneven stones and roadside traffic. Wind and rain can make an exposed stop feel colder than the shore town, so keep layers accessible.
Return without a border detour
Return through Tyup to Karakol or book a known local overnight before departure. This plan does not continue to a border post, Karkyra camp, Turuk or Sary-Jaz. Those names sometimes appear in longer itineraries, but introduce different road and access questions. Check fuel, tyres and the latest roadwork information, carry food and water, and leave daylight for the final approach and return. If a museum is closed, give the valley more time instead of improvising a high-country extension.
Preparation and equipment
Road vehicle appropriate to the current final approach; use a legal stopping place and walk when the access lane is unsuitable.
Track length: 94.9 km. This distance covers the track shown on the map. Add any approach, return or transfer sections that are outside it.
