ROUTE OVERVIEW

At a glance

The southern half of the highway

This ride explores the southern approach to Toktogul rather than repeating the Bishkek–Suusamyr crossing. It begins in the city now named Manas, widely recognised by its former name Jalal-Abad, and follows the established main-road corridor through Tash-Kumyr and Kara-Kul. The changing river, reservoir and mountain-road setting is the attraction. A road-touring motorcycle still requires full attention here: traffic, tunnels and long bends are part of the experience, not gaps between viewpoints.

Divide the stage before riding

Confirm a suitable overnight along the actual route before departure. Two days allows proper breaks and a daylight arrival at the final Toktogul address. Use the first settled stop to check how the group is coping with heat and traffic, then continue at a pace that leaves energy for the more enclosed road sections. Choose places where every motorcycle can stand completely clear of moving vehicles.

Kara-Kul is a useful geographical stage, but a town marker does not identify a workshop, open petrol station or booked room. Settle those details independently. Finish in Toktogul town, then ask the host about an allowed viewpoint. Do not follow the reservoir marker down an unverified track or enter a dam compound to get closer to the water.

Motorcycle-specific preparation

Check tyres, lights, brakes, luggage attachments and the final drive before leaving. Plan range from the loaded motorcycle’s actual consumption, with a reserve for diversions and a missed refill. Confirm the fuel stops you intend to use instead of assuming every mapped pump is open. Carry a puncture solution compatible with your wheels, basic tools and a way to contact the agreed assistance. Keep rain protection and insulating layers reachable without unloading everything.

A road journey with clear limits

Verify your driving documents, insurance and the rental agreement’s conditions before starting. The itinerary stays on the main corridor; it does not add Kaldama, a Kazarman connection or an assumed open tunnel shortcut. Avoid stopping at tunnel mouths or blind bends. If weather, roadwork or fatigue changes the day, move the overnight rather than forcing the original schedule. The return and any continuation towards Bishkek are separate stages with their own checks.

Preparation and equipment

Well-maintained road-touring/adventure motorcycle, weather-appropriate tyres, secure luggage and experience with highway traffic and mountain bends.

Track length: 299.2 km. This distance covers the track shown on the map. Add any approach, return or transfer sections that are outside it.
