ROUTE OVERVIEW
At a glance
The mountain highway
This journey follows the north–south road through changing mountain scenery: the climb out of Chuy, the Too-Ashuu tunnel, open Suusamyr, Ala-Bel and the wooded Chychkan corridor. It is a road-touring plan with traffic and long descents, requiring concentration even when the surface is paved.
Stages and overnight stops
Leave Bishkek after checking the latest restrictions. Use an agreed stop around Suusamyr and consider sleeping there before the next mountain section. Continue to a confirmed address in Toktogul, choosing a public viewpoint only after local advice. Never follow the reservoir pin towards an unknown shore track or operational infrastructure. Two or three days allows rests and photographs without making a delayed arrival a reason to ride faster.
Preparing the motorcycle
Check tyres, brakes, lights, chain or final drive and luggage fastenings before leaving. Calculate range from your own loaded motorcycle and confirm fuel availability along the actual stage; do not build the day around an unverified roadside pump. Carry puncture equipment compatible with your wheels and tools you know how to use. Keep waterproofs and a warm layer accessible. Verify your driving entitlement, vehicle papers, insurance and rental route approval before departure; a tour advertisement does not settle those questions for an independent rider.
Preparation and equipment
Well-maintained touring or adventure motorcycle, weather-appropriate tyres and a rider experienced on mountain roads.
Track length: 306.2 km. This distance covers the track shown on the map. Add any approach, return or transfer sections that are outside it.

Chuy and Jalal-Abad Regions
Getting there
Active tunnel and main highway only; overnight/parking addresses confirmed separately. No old summit road or reservoir-centre finish. Follow the active tunnel/highway via Suusamyr, Ala-Bel and Chychkan to a confirmed Toktogul address. No old Too-Ashuu summit road or reservoir-centre endpoint.
Without a car
Confirm transport to the actual trailhead, not just the nearest town. Agree the return pickup point and a latest contact time before leaving mobile coverage.
By car & parking
Ask locally about road access, entry rules and a permitted place to park. Use the line only for its stated mode of travel and exact scope.
What you will find along the way

- Bishkek 42.8760, 74.6037
- Suusamyr village 42.1814, 73.9582

A point of the supplied route geometry. It does not by itself confirm a parking area, settlement or safe access. Read the access and route notes before planning your visit.
Difficult sections & safety
Heavy traffic, tunnel visibility, long descents, crosswinds, rain, ice and fatigue. A clear day in Bishkek does not establish conditions on the passes.
How much time to allow
2–3 days one way. Planning allowance, not a measured riding time; add weather, stops and separately described return stages.
When to go
June–September planning window; check current mountain weather and restrictions.
What to bring
- Trail shoes or boots with good grip; layers, sun protection and waterproofs.
- Drinking water, food, a first-aid kit and a headlamp.
- An offline map, downloaded GPX, a charged phone and a power bank.
- An agreed return plan, local contact and a realistic fallback route.
