Its open space, monuments and surrounding public buildings bring national symbols and everyday city life into the same view. Rather than stopping only for a photograph, take time to notice how the square connects with nearby museum buildings, parks and streets. Public events can change access or the atmosphere, so a flexible walking plan is useful. Combine the square with a shaded route through the centre, especially in hot weather, and check any event restrictions on the day.
