Kara-Buura is a high road crossing on the connection between the Talas and Chatkal sides of western Kyrgyzstan. It is not interchangeable with the village, river or nature park carrying a similar name. A trip over the pass concerns a particular mountain road and a seasonal transport decision, not simply a visit to the broad Kara-Buura area.

The Ministry of Transport has issued closure notices for the pass on the Ala-Buka–Jany-Bazar–Kirovka road. These establish the seasonal nature of the route, while the actual opening or restriction for your departure needs a fresh check. Do not turn a typical seasonal pattern into a guaranteed calendar or assume that an overview map proves a continuous drive is possible.

For a journey, discuss the vehicle, the road variant and a practical fallback with someone who knows the crossing. Remote travel also needs realistic fuel, food and overnight arrangements. A scenic stop should not block the roadway or tempt the group onto an unplanned side route.

Published geographical references and a field expedition report give substantially different coordinates under the pass name. Until that discrepancy is resolved against the road geometry, this catalogue deliberately leaves the pin empty. The place is documented; the exact location used by different sources remains uncertain.

Exact feature point was not independently resolved; no guessed map pin.

Plan your visit

Getting there

Confirm the particular Talas–Chatkal road crossing and current permission to travel with road services; avoid planning from an uncertain map search.

When to visit

A seasonal mountain road; opening dates must be confirmed rather than inferred from a previous year.

Good to know

Confirm local access, opening arrangements and any entry rules before travel. Respect protected sites and local communities; leave the place as you found it.
