ROUTE OVERVIEW

At a glance

The mountain and the exact route

Free Korea rises above the upper Ak-Sai Glacier. Heights of 4,740 m and 4,777 m occur in climbing literature. The Lowe line is a separate ice route, reported as 5A; it must not be confused with the Andreev northwest-face entry or Barber route. Other teams using it for descent does not make it an easy ascent.

Approach, ascent and return

Arrange the approach from the Ak-Sai climbing area and inspect the intended line from a safe position. Build a plan for the entire wall and return, including retreat from below the upper section. Ice thickness, falling material and congestion can alter the decision even in a good forecast. This catalogue does not certify existing anchors, fixed ropes or an equipped descent.

Planning the attempt

Before committing, agree a turnaround time, check-in procedure and the conditions that will cancel the climb. Keep reserve time outside the advertised summit day. Download an offline topographic map, but do not interpret the catalogue’s orientation points as a surveyed climbing line. This is an expedition-planning overview; the climbing topo and current local assessment remain essential.

Preparation and equipment

Advanced ice leading, reliable protection, hanging belays, retreat and partner rescue. Discuss technical tools, crampons, screws, ropes, rock protection where required, bivouac options and communications with an experienced wall leader.

Is this route for you?

Choose the route after checking the actual start, finish and terrain with a local guide. Mapped geometry alone does not establish technical difficulty. Your group should be comfortable navigating offline and changing plans when conditions deteriorate.
