Route grading
5A From the classifier
Grade applies to this exact named line. Technical rock scales are kept in their original system and are not converted to a Russian alpine category.
Preparation
- Prior multi-day glacier and high-altitude climbing experience; technical rope work, self-rescue and an individual acclimatisation plan. Discuss expedition boots, insulated clothing, crampons, ice tools, harness, glacier-rescue kit, communications and camp support with the leader.

ROUTE OVERVIEW
At a glance
The mountain and the exact route
Khan Tengri is the pyramidal summit above the Inylchek glaciers on the frontier of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and China. The classifier gives the rock summit as 6,995 m; expedition programmes use 7,010 m including its snow and ice cap. This page covers the southern classic via the Semenovsky Glacier and the west ridge, not the northern approach across Chapaev.
Approach, ascent and return
Organise the approach to the South Inylchek base camp before travelling. Published programmes separate acclimatisation carries, a return to base camp and the summit attempt, with weather reserve days. Camp numbers and locations differ between operators, so use the current expedition plan rather than combining heights from different itineraries. The glacier passage below Chapaev is exposed to objective hazards; the descent and a delayed helicopter departure require their own reserves.
Planning the attempt
Before committing, agree a turnaround time, check-in procedure and the conditions that will cancel the climb. Keep reserve time outside the advertised summit day. Download an offline topographic map, but do not interpret the catalogue’s orientation points as a surveyed climbing line. This is an expedition-planning overview; the climbing topo and current local assessment remain essential.

Is this route for you?
Choose the route after checking the actual start, finish and terrain with a local guide. Mapped geometry alone does not establish technical difficulty. Your group should be comfortable navigating offline and changing plans when conditions deteriorate.

Getting there
Arrange the approach, camp arrangements and any required access documents with a local organiser. The map marks orientation points only; no verified GPX for this exact ascent is supplied.
Without a car
Confirm transport to the actual trailhead, not just the nearest town. Agree the return pickup point and a latest contact time before leaving mobile coverage.
By car & parking
Ask locally about road access, entry rules and a permitted place to park. Use the line only for its stated mode of travel and exact scope.
What you will find along the way

- Khan Tengri summit: orientation only 42.2108, 80.1750
A point of the supplied route geometry. It does not by itself confirm a parking area, settlement or safe access. Read the access and route notes before planning your visit.
Difficult sections & safety
Crevassed glacier, avalanche and serac exposure, high-altitude mixed ridge. Altitude, weather changes, falling material and a difficult retreat must be assessed for the exact line.
How much time to allow
About 21 days including approach and acclimatisation
