The archaeological site of Ak-Beshim preserves the remains of Suyab, an important Silk Road city in the Chuy Valley. Its value lies in the layers of urban life and the meeting of religious and cultural traditions rather than a collection of complete buildings. A visit rewards travellers who enjoy reading a landscape: earthworks, excavated areas and the setting of the former settlement tell the story together. Pair it with Burana to compare two different urban centres, and use a knowledgeable guide to make the less obvious features easier to understand.
