Route and stops

Planning your visit

The eastern Chuy plain offers a road trip built around settlements and trade rather than a high pass. UNESCO identifies Nevaket at Krasnaya Rechka, Suyab at Ak-Beshim and Balasagun at Burana as separate components of the Chang’an–Tianshan Silk Roads property. Seeing them together helps explain why a single tower cannot tell the whole story of this valley.

Leave Bishkek after confirming Burana’s visitor arrangements. Start with Nevaket and Ak-Beshim only when local access to the archaeological ground is clear. Much of the interest lies in low earthworks and the shape of the former cities; an informed guide or downloaded site explanation makes these stops more rewarding. Park beside an agreed public access road and explore on foot. Do not drive across earthworks or through cultivated fields to reach a map marker.

Keep the longest stop for Burana, then continue to Tokmok for a meal. Ask on the day which museum areas and tower interior are open; a stair climb is optional and need not determine whether the visit succeeds. Carry water and sun protection for the exposed plain.

Bishkek works as the overnight base for a day excursion. A night in Tokmok is another option if continuing east, with the exact accommodation entrance confirmed in advance. The driving line ends in Tokmok: return traffic, additional museums and village meals require their own allowance. The main corridor is paved, but small site approaches may be uneven or muddy. Rain, ice and access restrictions can justify dropping one of the two quieter city sites without rushing the rest.

Burana visitor parking, then Tokmok for food/overnight; archaeological stops are walks from legal access roads.

City reference only: choose a real accommodation pickup/parking point, not the centre pin.

Park on a confirmed public approach outside earthworks and fields; inspect the archaeological ground on foot.

Use a locally confirmed public approach and park outside archaeological remains; no driving across low walls or cultivated ground.

Drive to visitor parking, not to the tower itself. Museum and stair access are confirmed on the day.

Town reference for supplies/food/accommodation; select a legal parking or property entrance separately.

Preparation and equipment

Ordinary road vehicle only on currently open, firm public approaches; inspect any unpaved final turn before entering.

Track length: 104.8 km. This distance covers the track shown on the map. Add any approach, return or transfer sections that are outside it.
