Horse trekking in Kyrgyzstan: choosing a guide, a horse and the right journey
From a first guided ride in Jyrgalan to the pastures around Song-Kul, plan the journey around rider experience, animal care and clear overnight arrangements.

Being comfortable around horses and being ready for a mountain trek are different things. Tell the organiser when you last rode, whether you can control a horse independently and how long you expect to sit in the saddle. Beginners can start with a shorter guided outing near a village. A gentle first day lets the guide assess the match between rider, horse and route before anyone commits to a remote overnight journey.
Compare two distinct mountain settings
The route from Kyzart through Kilemche towards Song-Kul is a journey between pasture landscapes and yurt stays. In the east, a ride from Jyrgalan towards Turnaluu-Kol uses a village base and a different group of mountain valleys. Choose the experience first: a short introduction, a full day outside or several days moving between camps. They are not interchangeable products.
Discuss the guide and equipment
Ask who accompanies the group, which language they use and how instructions will be demonstrated. Confirm helmet availability and fit, saddle comfort, luggage limits and whether a separate pack horse is needed. Request a practical briefing on mounting, stopping, spacing and the guide’s signals. Let the handler decide how to approach and stand near the horse; copying another rider without understanding the animal can create unnecessary problems.
Make animal care part of your choice
Look for a calm handover and equipment that the handler checks carefully. Discuss rest breaks, water, loading and what happens if a horse appears uncomfortable or tired. Raise concerns immediately instead of waiting until the next camp. Do not demand speed for photographs, extra distance or a dramatic river crossing. A responsible itinerary is shaped by the condition of both people and animals, not just the destination printed in the programme.
Check what your overnight stay includes
A yurt stay near Song-Kul is different from a hotel reservation. Confirm bedding, meals, washing and toilet arrangements, dietary needs and where luggage goes during the ride. Pack weather protection and warm layers in something you can reach without unloading everything. Ask how the itinerary changes if a high section is unsuitable. Seasonal pasture camps and mountain tracks should be reconfirmed for your actual dates.
Allow time for village stops and the return
Horse travel can make the journey itself the main attraction. Accept invitations and photograph people only with permission; do not treat working camps as a stage set. Agree the final pickup location and who handles onward transport before leaving the village. Browse the horseback itineraries for an appropriate starting idea, then let your experience and a local guide determine the practical route.
