Route grading
French 7a/7b; long traditional rock route Reported by the source
Grade applies to this exact named line. Technical rock scales are kept in their original system and are not converted to a Russian alpine category.
Preparation
- Advanced trad crack climbing, efficient multi-pitch rope work, natural protection and remote rescue planning. Discuss rack sizes and duplication, ropes, descent gear, communications and bivouac provisions against a current topo.

ROUTE OVERVIEW
At a glance
The mountain and the exact route
Perestroika Crack follows the Russian Tower, also called Pik Slesova, in the Ak-Suu branch of Karavshin. The reported summit height is 4,240 m. Published ascents describe a long crack-climbing line; the 2015 team reports about 800 m at 7a/b. That climbing length is not the full approach distance and is not entered as a GPS measurement.
Approach, ascent and return
Plan a remote climbing expedition rather than a day visit from a road. Confirm the valley approach and transport with a local organiser, then allow time to acclimatise and inspect the wall. Build a route-specific rack from a recent topo, assess retreat and descent options, and plan for a slower team or unexpected bivouac. The gallery identifies Karavshin valley scenery; it is not a photographic topo of this crack.
Planning the attempt
Before committing, agree a turnaround time, check-in procedure and the conditions that will cancel the climb. Keep reserve time outside the advertised summit day. Download an offline topographic map, but do not interpret the catalogue’s orientation points as a surveyed climbing line. This is an expedition-planning overview; the climbing topo and current local assessment remain essential.

Is this route for you?
Choose the route after checking the actual start, finish and terrain with a local guide. Mapped geometry alone does not establish technical difficulty. Your group should be comfortable navigating offline and changing plans when conditions deteriorate.

Getting there
Arrange the approach, camp arrangements and any required access documents with a local organiser. The map marks orientation points only; no verified GPX for this exact ascent is supplied.
Without a car
Confirm transport to the actual trailhead, not just the nearest town. Agree the return pickup point and a latest contact time before leaving mobile coverage.
By car & parking
Ask locally about road access, entry rules and a permitted place to park. Use the line only for its stated mode of travel and exact scope.
What you will find along the way
Russian Tower: Perestroika Crack
- Russian Tower / Pik Slesova: orientation 39.6114, 70.3066
A point of the supplied route geometry. It does not by itself confirm a parking area, settlement or safe access. Read the access and route notes before planning your visit.
Difficult sections & safety
Long granite cracks, corners and alpine descent. Altitude, weather changes, falling material and a difficult retreat must be assessed for the exact line.
How much time to allow
Expedition approach plus a long wall ascent and weather reserve
When to go
Confirm the summer rock-climbing window locally
