ROUTE OVERVIEW

At a glance

The mountain and the exact route

La Fiamma d’Oriente is a separate line on Pik Slesova, the Russian Tower of the Karavshin Ak-Suu valley. Nik Berry’s account describes a 19-pitch free ascent in 2012 with Madaleine Sorkin, including a sparsely protected 5.12c R crux. The line shares sections with Perestroika Crack but is not interchangeable with it. The tower is reported at 4,240 m in regional climbing accounts.

Approach, ascent and return

Treat the R suffix as a protection warning, not an optional challenge. The technical free-climbing grade does not encode the approach, altitude, time on the wall or rescue difficulty. Before departure obtain a recent topo and a team-specific assessment of the runouts. A repeat attempt needs a realistic retreat and bivouac plan even when an earlier team completed the line in two days.

Planning the attempt

Before committing, agree a turnaround time, check-in procedure and the conditions that will cancel the climb. Keep reserve time outside the advertised summit day. Download an offline topographic map, but do not interpret the catalogue’s orientation points as a surveyed climbing line. This is an expedition-planning overview; the climbing topo and current local assessment remain essential.

Preparation and equipment

Expert traditional free climbing, composure on runouts, partner rescue and efficient long-route systems. Discuss specialised protection, ropes, descent equipment, bivouac system and remote communications with the team.

Is this route for you?

Choose the route after checking the actual start, finish and terrain with a local guide. Mapped geometry alone does not establish technical difficulty. Your group should be comfortable navigating offline and changing plans when conditions deteriorate.
