ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Tash Rabat is a stone caravanserai in a high valley of the At-Bashy mountain region, south of Naryn. Its enclosed masonry spaces and mountain setting belong to the history of travel through the interior of the Tien Shan. It is a very different object from the large lake landscape of Issyk-Kul.

A journey between them reveals that difference in scale and setting. The shoreline gives way to inland valleys, regional towns and high pasture country before the stone building becomes the focus. Naryn helps place the caravanserai within central Kyrgyzstan’s geography, while Tash Rabat itself deserves attention as a historic structure within a mountain landscape.
