ROUTE OVERVIEW

At a glance

Route and stops

Start in Suusamyr village after arranging a transfer over the mountains. Make the first part of the day deliberately unhurried: check how the loaded bicycle behaves on the road, top up supplies and ask about construction ahead. Continue through Kozhomkul before following the road toward Kyzyl-Oi. Ecotour includes the Suusamyr–Kyzyl-Oi corridor in a cycling itinerary, while the national road authority identifies the villages along the Aral–Suusamyr project. Roadworks may therefore matter as much as the natural terrain.

Treat Kozhomkul as a useful pause rather than a guaranteed cafe stop. Carry lunch and enough drinking water from the start, and agree an evening meal with your Kyzyl-Oi host. Stop completely before photographing the red slopes or river; narrow road edges are poor places to balance a bicycle. A gravel or touring bicycle with generous tyres and a low gear is more useful here than a light road-racing setup.

Planning your visit

Finish with a night in the village, or pre-book a vehicle that can carry the whole group and its bikes. Returning uphill is a separate riding day. The displayed connection is a planned road variant, not a record of a recent inspection, and temporary construction diversions require a local check.

Preparation and equipment

Touring, gravel or mountain bicycle with broad tyres, low gears and reliable brakes.

Track length: 40.1 km. This distance covers the track shown on the map. Add any approach, return or transfer sections that are outside it.

Getting there

Arrange a bicycle-capable transfer to Suusamyr village; reserve a Kyzyl-Oi homestay or pickup before setting out.

Without a car

Confirm transport to the actual trailhead, not just the nearest town. Agree the return pickup point and a latest contact time before leaving mobile coverage.

By car & parking

Ask locally about road access, entry rules and a permitted place to park. Use the line only for its stated mode of travel and exact scope.

What you will find along the way

Suusamyr pastures, Kozhomkul village and the Kokomeren valley around Kyzyl-Oi.

  1. Suusamyr village 42.1814, 73.9582

A point of the supplied route geometry. It does not by itself confirm a parking area, settlement or safe access. Read the access and route notes before planning your visit.

  2. Kozhomkul 42.1281, 74.0802
  3. Kyzyl-Oi 41.9508, 74.1628

Difficult sections & safety

Construction traffic, dust, narrow sections above the river, loose gravel and changing weather. Ask about roadworks and avoid riding after dark.

How much time to allow

Allow a full riding day with stops; overnight in Kyzyl-Oi gives a safer margin than a tight evening connection.

When to go

Summer to early autumn; verify weather and access over the road passes used by your transfer.

What to bring

  • Trail shoes or boots with good grip; layers, sun protection and waterproofs.
  • Drinking water, food, a first-aid kit and a headlamp.
  • An offline map, downloaded GPX, a charged phone and a power bank.
  • An agreed return plan, local contact and a realistic fallback route.
