ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

The Kokomeren valley is a river corridor in the interior of Kyrgyzstan, associated with mountain settlements such as Kyzyl-Oi. Its enclosing slopes and river setting contrast with the broad high pasture basin of Song-Kul and the urban valley setting of Naryn.

A journey connecting these places is interesting because it passes between different forms of mountain country: a river gorge, open upland grazing land and a regional town on a major river. The geographical objects are the valleys and lake basin themselves. Their connection gives the journey a larger structure than a sequence of unrelated road stops.

How much time to allow

Choose the number of days around your stops, group ability and current conditions. Leave daylight in reserve when combining travel with an unfamiliar section.

When to go

Summer riding window; high approaches depend on current pass conditions.

What to bring

Choose equipment for your mode of travel, forecast and overnight arrangements. Agree support and return logistics beforehand.

  • Trail shoes or boots with good grip; layers, sun protection and waterproofs.
  • Drinking water, food, a first-aid kit and a headlamp.
  • An offline map, downloaded GPX, a charged phone and a power bank.
  • An agreed return plan, local contact and a realistic fallback route.
