ROUTE OVERVIEW

At a glance

Route and stops

Base yourself in a guesthouse in Kalmak-Ashuu and ride toward Shabdan before returning along the same village-road corridor. This makes the day easy to shorten: the turnaround is a decision, not a summit that must be reached. Cycling operators include village rides in Chon-Kemin, but the particular out-and-back shown here is our editorial road variant, not their advertised loop or a surveyed mountain-bike trail.

Ask your host which road is currently most comfortable and where agricultural work or construction is taking place. Carry enough food for the chosen outing even if you hope to stop in a village. A small amount of cash and a lock make a spontaneous tea stop easier, but do not assume a household is operating a cafe. Ask before entering yards or photographing people. Give livestock plenty of room and pass horses slowly.

Planning your visit

Use the first stretch to decide whether to continue or turn early; riding back into wind can take longer than the outward leg. A gravel bicycle or hardtail with suitable gearing suits this style of day. For an e-bike, start charged and retain a margin for the return. Leave the upper valley, lake approaches and mountain crossings for a separate trip planned with local knowledge. This outing is about enjoying villages and valley scenery without committing to a remote pass.

Preparation and equipment

Gravel, hybrid or hardtail mountain bicycle; an e-bike needs sufficient battery for the return.
