ROUTE OVERVIEW
At a glance
A defined summer approach
This approach reaches Song-Kul from Kochkor over Kalmak-Ashuu, with a mapped northern-shore road point as its outward endpoint. It provides a shorter alternative to the Kokomeren circuit. The lake-centre marker is never a riding destination. A published motorcycle expedition includes Kalmak-Ashuu as a crossing, while current snow and surface still need local confirmation.
The climb and lake road
Begin in Kochkor, use the established approach through the Sary-Bulak junction and verify the correct turn before climbing. Continue over the road pass only if conditions suit the group. The final mapped track is an approach towards the shore, not a certified parking or camp entrance. Stop earlier if mud, ruts or stones exceed the group’s ability. Return by the checked approach rather than adding an unfamiliar pass to create a loop.
Range, kit and accommodation
Calculate usable fuel range with a reserve for retracing the road. Light luggage, suitable tyres, puncture equipment, waterproofs and insulation matter more than engine size. Loaded loose-surface riding needs prior experience. Book a yurt only after the host confirms an exact permitted arrival point, current access, meals and bedding; otherwise arrange the return night in Kochkor. Verify licence, insurance and rental restrictions before committing to gravel and the final track.
Preparation and equipment
Light dual-sport or manageable adventure motorcycle with suitable tyres; confident loaded-gravel riding and a recovery plan.
Track length: 102.5 km. This distance covers the track shown on the map. Add any approach, return or transfer sections that are outside it.
Is this route for you?
Choose the route after checking the actual start, finish and terrain with a local guide. Mapped geometry alone does not establish technical difficulty. Your group should be comfortable navigating offline and changing plans when conditions deteriorate.

Getting there
Mapped Kalmak-Ashuu road crossing, then a northern-shore track approach; final access is conditional. Endpoint is an exact track node, not the lake centre or guaranteed parking. Northern-shore road approach node12072963653 on highway=track way1303630478 (41.8944366,75.1821091), via Kalmak-Ashuu pass node861198457. No parking or camp licence is established by OSM. Stop earlier if current access/surface is unsuitable.
Without a car
Confirm transport to the actual trailhead, not just the nearest town. Agree the return pickup point and a latest contact time before leaving mobile coverage.
By car & parking
Ask locally about road access, entry rules and a permitted place to park. Use the line only for its stated mode of travel and exact scope.
What you will find along the way
Kochkor approach, high pastures and Kalmak-Ashuu; Song-Kul only as a separately confirmed continuation.
- Kochkor 42.2132, 75.7543
- Kalmak-Ashuu road pass 41.9143, 75.4212
A point of the supplied route geometry. It does not by itself confirm a parking area, settlement or safe access. Read the access and route notes before planning your visit.
- Song-Kul mapped shore-road approach 41.8944, 75.1821
A point of the supplied route geometry. It does not by itself confirm a parking area, settlement or safe access. Read the access and route notes before planning your visit.
Difficult sections & safety
Snow, altitude, exposure, mud, loose stones, ruts and limited turnaround room. No seasonal opening date or rideability is guaranteed.
How much time to allow
2 days including the return; a confirmed lake camp adds time. Planning allowance, not a measured riding time; add weather, stops and separately described return stages.
When to go
July–August is a cautious core planning window, subject to actual snow clearance and weather.
What to bring
- Trail shoes or boots with good grip; layers, sun protection and waterproofs.
- Drinking water, food, a first-aid kit and a headlamp.
- An offline map, downloaded GPX, a charged phone and a power bank.
- An agreed return plan, local contact and a realistic fallback route.
