ROUTE OVERVIEW

At a glance

From the village to the pastures

Kol-Ukok offers a compact overnight horse journey organised from Kochkor. CBT Karakol publishes a two-day programme with a road transfer to Isakeev village, riding through the Ters-Tor pasture area and a yurt night near the lake. It gives a useful structure for planning, while the actual horses, meeting point and camp need confirmation for your dates. The Kochkor map marker is an organisation base, not a claim that the horse trail begins in the centre of town.

Arrive in Kochkor with enough time to meet the organiser and explain your experience honestly. Check the riding helmet and footwear before leaving the accommodation. If a group has mixed ability, choose the day around the least confident participant rather than assuming a gentle-sounding destination suits everyone equally.

The first riding day

Keep the transfer and the time in the saddle separate in your schedule. A short vehicle approach can still lead to a substantial mountain day. Ask the guide where the group will stop for lunch, how bags are carried and what happens if someone needs to shorten the ride. Secure loose straps and camera equipment before mounting so the group is not repeatedly stopping to fix luggage.

The ride is an opportunity to observe the pasture landscape at an unhurried pace. Give working livestock space and ask before entering a household’s living area. Stop for photographs when the guide has chosen a suitable place; do not let a view distract you while the horse is moving over awkward ground.

A yurt night near Kol-Ukok

Confirm the exact camp and what is supplied for sleeping before departure. Ask about bedding, a personal sleeping bag, meal preferences and the arrangements for drinking water. Carry a headlamp and keep a warm layer accessible for the evening rather than packing everything into a bag that is difficult to reach. Treat a photograph of a yurt camp as an illustration of the area, not proof that the same camp is open.

Use the lake stay for rest and a modest walk chosen with the guide. Higher Kol-Tor is an optional extension in some programmes, not a necessary part of this itinerary. It should only be added after discussing conditions, time and the whole group’s comfort.

Return to Kochkor

The following day returns toward the village pickup and then Kochkor. Confirm the vehicle time before heading back so you can ride steadily rather than chasing a departure. Leave a margin before onward travel from town. The map deliberately keeps to known base and destination anchors: it does not draw a trail, choose a ford or locate an unverified overnight camp. A local horse guide supplies those decisions, and recent ground conditions take precedence over a published programme.

Preparation and equipment

Locally selected riding horses with a horse guide, agreed baggage support and a correctly fitted helmet.

Is this route for you?

Choose the route after checking the actual start, finish and terrain with a local guide. Mapped geometry alone does not establish technical difficulty. Your group should be comfortable navigating offline and changing plans when conditions deteriorate.
